Pipe Tomahawk
Pipe Tomahawk

This neat Pipe Tomahawk came from the James A. Knowles collection of fine Tomahawks. He and Dan Hartzler co-authored the definitive book "Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersman Belt Axes". This is a 18th century American Pipe Tomahawk. It has a octagon shaped tapered bowl made from a rifle barrel and still has rifling in the interior. There is a heavily grooved chevron and well defined molding on the 6 1/2" x 2 3/4" two piece iron head having a steel bit and tear dropped eye. The 18 1/4" silver mounted half transitions from teardrop shape at the head to round at the silver mouthpiece and has 3 silver bands, the upper 2 having scalloped edges, plus it has a silver cap at the eye end. It is in fine condition with a relatively smooth dark patina on the iron, tarnishing in the protected areas of the silver, and a mellow patina on the haft which is free from cracks but exhibits some very minor dings. A great Hawk from a top of the line collection .
