This chromolithograph of Abraham Lincoln is by E.C. Middleton and dated 1864. Chromolithography was the first process for making multi-colored prints and was perfected by the E.C. Middleton Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Made with fine oils, these prints are laid down on a canvas board and look like actual oil paintings. In the chromolithographic process the vibrant colors are painted onto stone slabs by hand and the print is laid onto the board. This is a very good example of the Lincoln portrait and still has what appears to be it's original frame of wood with gold-painted gesso with floral motif. Middleton actually solicited the Presidents advise, sending a proof copy of the print and receiving in return a letter from Pres. Lincoln with both compliment and critique.  There are some area's wear the paint is starting break down but this is minimal and the face is unaffected. Being located in Cincinnati ,Ohio Middleton was in the perfect place to take advantage of the western migration after the Civil War. These Lincoln portraits ended up in schools and courthouse throughout the West.
