An exceedingly rare and beautiful outfit.  The gutta percha S&W case is a rarity all by itself .  The pistol is a work of art and belonged to a man who saw action at the  Battle of Gettysburg.  Actually, as a result of Capt. Ayer's experience at Gettysburg  he went to work at Ft. Schuyler, N.Y hospital after being mustered out Aug. 5, 1863 and begin studying  medicine. He earned his MD in 1866 and begin work as a physician at New York City's St .Luke's hospital. The pistol is in very good-fine condition. The frame retains 95% of it's original silver finish while the engraved  barrel and cylinder have developed a pleasing blue-brown patina. The raised carved ivory grips have acquired a very pleasing aged patina. The case contains a full block of ammunition. An exceptional outfit with some great American history.
