This is a beautiful example of a New Orleans  bowie knife. It’s engraved on the spine of the blade  Manufacrured for F.C Goergen New Orleans. I had to take two pictures as the Manufactured For is faint. These are extremely rare knives and very desirable.  Most of these when found have a etched panel on the right blade flat such as Mississippi Toaster, My Wife and My Knife etc. this one doesn’t and shows no sign of ever having had one. The only other one that I’m aware of without a logo is pictured on pg.325 of  The Bowie Knife   by Norm Flayderman. which makes this knife even rarer.  The ebony grip is both checkered and carved. The scabbard is original and has had it’s german silver tip replaced. The belief (no one knows for sure) is that these knives were made in France and also by Rose , N.Y.C  for F.C Goergen . The  pommel and the crossguard on this knife closely resemble known  Rose  knifes. F.C. Goergen was in busines in New Orleans from 1842 to 1849.  The 8 1/4″ blade has a 3″ false edge and is razor sharp. These rare knives seldom come up for sale.
