This is a beautiful pewter Whiskey Flask identified to  Capt. G. B French 4th Vt..  He saw service in three different units much of it with the 4th Vermont Inf.  He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness .  He mustered out of the 4th Vt. on 9/30/64 and reenlisted in the 26th N.Y Cav. on 1/3/65 where he served until mustering out on 6/27/65 . This regiment, known as the Frontier Cavalry, was organized in the states of New York, Massachusetts and Vermont under special authority from the War Department to serve on the Northern frontier for one year.  Capt. French  saw action in some of the bloodiest battles of the War to include Antietam , Fredericksburg,  Gettysburg and the Wilderness.  The flask itself is in very good shape and measures 5 1/2"x 3"x 1 1/2". It was made by James Dixon of Sheffield , England and is so marked on it's base.  Very historic Civil War piece!
