This is a very early Colt S/A as it doesn't have any cylinder bolt guide grooves .These were added in 1874 after serial number 8000. I can still make out a partial serial number on the frame of a 6 & a 5. The cylinder still retains 4 unfired cartridges . The back strap was purposely broken off by hitting it on a rock. After a battle soldiers would gather the Indian arms, off the dead , and break them apart so they would be unservicable if the war party returned. Would diplay nicely in any western collection .
