This is a beautiful untouched 2nd model Brown Bess that was made in Liege for American Loyalist Troops.  It exhibits the Liege  shaded Tower and Crown on the lock along with Liege gunmaker Jean Gosvin  IG sunken cartouche on the barrel. According to the book "The Brown Bess " by Erik Goldstein and Stuart Mowbray these Liege Brown Bess' are very scarce .They were produced for the British government based on the Short Land Pattern (2nd Model Brown Bess) in the Low Countries of Belgium (Liege) and the Netherlands in 1778. The book further states that these Liege muskets were sent to America for use by Loyalist troops.  The action works only on full cock.  The wrist escutcheon is held in place by 3 old hand made nails as is the front finial of the trigger guard.   Overall the musket exhibits a heavy untouched patina. The 41" barrel is .79 cal.  This musket is new to the collector market and will come with a letter from the man who bought it from the original family who lived in  old house near Halifax, Nova Scotia.  After the War many Loyalist moved to Canada and Nova Scotia, as the hatred for Tory's continued after the War.
