This is a true Cowboy  pistol manufactured in 1896.  It's got the owner's name Carl Ciampo -Bitterroot Valley -Montana  period scratched into the bottom of the grip. It also exhibits 3 different cattle brands.  The butt has a J inside a Diamond. The left grip has a Z with a bar through it and the right grip has what appears to be a flying U. More than likely 3 different ranch's that Mr. Ciampo worked on while in Montana. The pistol has seen much use but is still in pretty good shape with a good bore . All the serial numbers match.
